| Short trips away in the UK |
Long weekends are a great opportunity for a short holiday to relax and unwind. In this 3 part article I'll investigate some great services that can help us do just that. From the getting there to accommodation to sightseeing and activities.
Part 1 - Getting There Regardless of whether you have personal transportation or not - trains and coaches are a great way to travel across the country quickly and easily. Fares can be very cheap even if you don't book far in advance. Let's take a look.
Split your ticket http://www.splityourticket.co.uk I discovered this site recently while looking for discount rail for a trip I'm planning in April. They have worked out a cheeky method of saving money on cross-country rail, even if you book at the last minute. The trick is to split your journey into smaller distances. Instead of buying a ticket from A to C, you buy cheaper tickets from A to B then B to C, all the while staying on the same train.
The Trainline http://www.thetrainline.com This service sells tickets for any national rail journey. They have some great prices when you book ahead including trips on the Eurostar (currently from £55 return).
RailEasy http://www.raileasy.co.uk This service covers the British Isles and can also help with other linked transport including Ferries, Buses and Underground trips.
Rail Maps http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/tocs_maps/maps/network_rail_maps.htm If you're not sure of where you'd like to travel or to see if you can get to your destination easily by train, take a look at the link above.National Rail have some excellent maps documenting all National Rail services across mainland UK.
Traveline http://www.traveline.org.uk A great site for planning the transport element of your trip. Enter your location, destination and date of departure and it will give you all available transport options. Includes maximum journey time and provides instructions for each option.
PlusBus http://www.plusbus.info Great concept. When you buy your train ticket you can ask to add PlusBus and get discounted unlimited bus travel around your destination from £2 a day. Apart from the saving, you also won't need to worry about extra tickets.
Megabus http://www.megabus.com/uk/ I've travelled on a Megabus bus to Oxford from London and back and I must say, it was a great experience. Sitting upstairs at the front gave a great view as we ventured from city to city. They weren't running a very strict timetable though, so it might be advisable not to arrange to arrive at a very specific time.
National Express Coaches http://www.nationalexpress.com/coach/offers/funfares.cfm A great way to travel inexpensively! Fares start at £1 one way. The cheap fares are usually in the morning so you'll have to be prepared to get up early in order to grab this bargain.
As you can see, there are a great many options available when it comes to booking transport for your getaway and it can be done very inexpensively which, I think, makes it even more enjoyable.
