If you're looking to get away from the hustle, bustle and noise of City life for a quiet weekend in the countryside, there are lots of options available that make it easy to escape and without eating too much into the week's pay packet.
Without a doubt, the cheapest intercity rides can be picked up on services such as Megabus and National Express, both of which provide bus and train travel - often for as little as £1 (though these fares do typically require a very early morning departure).
Overnight stays at hotel chains can often be picked up for as little as £20 pp pn if you time it right and can be a helpful way of deciding where to go if you've no idea. Try YHA for year round bargains from £10 (if you don't mind sharing), Expedia, or keep an eye on Ibis who often have great promotional deals during quiet periods.
If you're after a bit more tranquility and isolation, be sure to check out Guardian Cottages (put together by the newspaper group) and National Trust Cottages (over 370 historic properties in outstanding locations). These out-of-the-way retreats are a great way to relax and unwind, though generally require a car for convenient access. If you're a true city dweller, you can hire a rental at the usual outlets such as Europcar, Avis, Sixt, Hertz, Thrifty - or compare quotes at TravelSupermarket.com
As you can see, short breaks within the UK can be easily organised online and needn't cost the earth. With so many options though, the hardest bit is often deciding where and when to go!
