 | | Don't ruin Mother's Day with your choice of flowers. |
The time for flowers isn't over yet, and not in the sense that Spring is on its way. If there's one occasion for flowers other than Valentine's Day, it's Mother's Day. To follow on from our previous article on the meanings of Valentine-appropriate flowers and to help you make some decisions about what flowers to buy, here's a list of some flowers whose meanings might capture an aspect of your relationship with your one and only Mother.
The two most relevant flowers for Mother's Day are Pink Carnations and Day Lilies. The Pink Carnation is in fact the emblem of Mother's Day, and a symbol of gratitude. The Day Lily is the emblem of the Mother - that is, the woman herself. And then there's Coltsfoot, which is a symbol of maternal love and care - but you're unlikely to find that in a bouquet (for those who don't know, these flowers are similar to dandelions - in both appearance and the manner in which they grow).
Pink Carnations are probably easier to come by than Day Lilies but the advantage of Day Lilies is that they mean the same thing whatever the colour, unlike Dandelions, where the different colours can mean anything from passionate, deep love to disdain and rejection - not very appropriate for a nice Mother's Day gesture! Day Lilies come in all sorts of colours and varieties too - from more traditional yellow and orange to red, purple or white. And, if you're wondering, they come in pink too.
Speaking of pink, quite a number of the appropriate flowers for this occasion come in this colour - which offers you lots of choice in terms of variety, but may not be so good if your Mum doesn't much like pink! Don't worry though, we've included all the non-pink options below as well.
Some of these flowers will be much easier to come by than others, but we've included them all for the sake of interest. Keep in mind, you're not always going to able to find an arrangement which includes exactly what you want from this list. Have a go looking through various sites for what you want but the best option may be to choose one type of flower you think your Mum would like and pick an arrangement which includes that particular choice. These florists know what they're doing with arrangements so why not use that to your advantage?
