Don't trust footwear size charts when buying footwear online! There is no standard and sizes can also vary between manufacturers.
I originally tried to compile a conversion table for this article and was amazed at how not one of the 20+ charts I studied were identical. They all differed in some way and some by very large amounts.
I recently ordered a pair of Dr Martins boots which arrived today. I ordered a UK size 9 which I knew was approximately my size but I became very anxious when I found a table which made conversions from the size of your feet in millimeters. I thought this was a great idea but the table had my 285mm feet as a UK size 12. The UK 9's I ordered are a perfect fit!
How then do we know what size to buy?
If you don't know your size in your local measurement, then it's best to go to a real-world store for a fitting in the style you're interested in. That will give you a rough idea.
If you're ordering from abroad, my recommendation would be to send the store an email and ask them about the conversion printed on the shoes you're interested in.
Lastly, but most importantly, before buying shoes online, make sure the store maintains a returns policy.
There is much more choice and competition online so it's possible to find yourself a real bargain on footwear not available locally. Online stores don't have the overheads of real-world stores and can offer lower prices in return. It can be difficult sizing shoes and garments without a fitting, but remember, as long as the store maintains a returns policy, you won't get stuck with something that doesn't fit.
